How to Select the Right Table

February 5, 2016.

There are so many options out there, round, square, oval, or rectangle. Which one is right for you? Style is important but making sure it fits your space and provides enough seating is essential.

The table needs to allow space for the number of diners you want to seat comfortable and leave enough room to walk around it.

Wall to Table Clearance

Measure the room. To allow diners to sit down and get up easily from their seats, allow between 40″ to 48″ of space from the table to the walls or table to the furniture.

Measure

Take a bed sheet, newspaper or tape to outline the space where the table will go. This helps to visualize the space it will take up. Measure the wall or furniture to table clearance. If your ideal table can be extended by adding leaves, don’t forget to include this in your calculations.

Round Tables

Round tables are great for small spaces. There are no sharp corners to bump into and you can generally fit more people around a round table. Tables with pedestal offer more leg room. A 48″ round table seats 4 people while a 54″ seats 5 people. A 72″ round table will seat up to 8 people. It can be difficult to reach the centre of large round tables. Rectangular tables seem to work better for seating larger crowds.

Rectangular Tables

Rectangular tables work well in long narrow rooms and allow for good traffic flow around the room. We build very large tables but the most common sizes tend to be 72″ to 108″ long. The general table width is between 40 – 42″ providing adequate place setting space and room down the centre of the table for food. As tables get longer, generally the width gets wider. A 48″ long table seats 4 people, while 60″ to 72″ seats 6 people comfortably. An 84″ long table will seat 8 people. 96″ to 108″ long table will seat 10 people and allow 108″ to 120″ to seat gatherings of 12.

Square Tables

If your room is square a square table looks good mimicking the shape of the room. Like a round table, a square table makes for a more intimate dining experience because everyone around the table is at an equal distance apart. Like a round table, the larger the square the harder it is to reach the centre of the table.
